How I met a Japanese partner – Tom

Tom & Ayaka – they met at an OMIAI, a Japanese traditional first date

OzMatch, an international matchmaking agency organise OMIAI for our Executive members. OMIAI is a Japanese traditional first date organised by an intermediary matchmaker.

Tom had a dream of having a Japanese girlfriend but never believed it would happen, then he came to OzMatch and turned his dream into reality. He met Ayaka within six weeks of joining OzMatch and now they are in a committed relationship and very happy.

Tom was so keen to embrace Japanese culture in order to understand Ayaka better that he started studying Japanese Tea Ceremony and language. He has his own Japanese Kimono and Hakama.

He started visiting Japanese grocery stores regularly in order to experience Japanese cuisine and discuss his experiences with Ayaka.

His Japanese partner, Ayaka is now working for OzMatch. Her experiences as an OzMatch Executive member and finding a successful relationship has given her the insight to be able to help other OzMatch members to find the perfect partner.

This is what Tom said about his partner Ayaka and his experience with our international matchmaking agency OzMatch, below:

I often wondered what it would be like having a Japanese girlfriend”

I always had an interest in Japan growing up, including Japan’s history/culture

but over time also a developing respect for the Japanese dedication and willingness to accept tough situations in life. In addition, I also admire the Japanese traditional values of commitment, politeness, patience and thinking of others.

Growing up I also often wondered what it would be like having a Japanese girlfriend. However, as the years went past, I always thought it would remain a dream and nothing more. That is, until I found OzMatch and meet Ayaka in an OMIAI.”

“Before I met her, I could not imagine what I was really missing in my life”

“Before I met Ayaka, I could not imagine how my life would change or rather what I was really missing in my life.

When I first met Ayaka in my OMIAI, something just clicked and I found her both beautiful, interesting and easy to talk to. Though there was a little nervousness, it felt very natural and relaxed talking to her no matter what topic we discussed.

At the end of the OMIAI I really wanted to talk more with Ayaka and it did not take long after the OMIAI for me to realise that she was the one I had been looking for in my life. Ayaka has a charming, warm, intelligent and open personality, a beautiful outside and displays the traditional Japanese values that I admire. In addition to this, Ayaka also has a similar view on life and goals.

Since our first OMIAI, we continue to talk daily (up to a couple of hours) and our love for each other has grown deeper with each passing day. The interesting part is that Ayaka and I have not yet met in real life (she is in Japan and I am in Australia) but we still know that we want each other and no one else.

Being in a long-distance relationship has its challenges

“Being in a long-distance relationship has its challenges, with the main one being that we want to meet and start our life together but have been prevented from doing so because of the closed borders.

However, it also has the advantage that you get to know the other person really well. By the time you meet you already know that you have compatible personalities and similar views on life.

I am currently planning to visit Japan to see Ayaka, after the borders have reopened, to be introduced to Ayaka’s parents, siblings, relatives and friends. During this trip I also want to see where Ayaka grew up, temples she visits etc. In short, all the important people and significant places in Ayaka’s life.

“I have really enjoyed my daily conversations with my Japanese partner”

“I have really enjoyed my daily conversations with Ayaka but also sending gifts and letters to her.

Ayaka and I are very committed to each other, which is one part of our relationship I really like. We both come from prior relationships with clear (similar) views on what we seek in life and from each other. We both value talking about our feelings for each other, investing in the relationship (‘what you put in is what you get out’), openness to other cultures and experiences and of course supporting each other.”

I am thankful to OzMatch for bringing her into my life”

“In summary, I could not have hoped to find a better match for me than Ayaka and I find myself both fortunate. I am thankful to OzMatch for bringing her into my life. Our story will keep growing with each passing day and I look forward to the next chapter in Ayaka’s and my life together.”
