A Traditional Japanese Wedding in Kyoto Under the Cherry Blossoms

Japanese culture, history, and love came together

Last week on 1st of April, I had the honour of attending the wedding of one of our OZMATCH couples.

It was held at a traditional shrine in Kyoto, right in the middle of cherry blossom season.
The sakura were in full bloom, quietly surrounding the ceremony with a kind of beauty that words can hardly describe.

Both the bride and groom wore traditional Japanese attire.
And as guests, we were also invited to dress in kimono.
I wore a houmongi (formal kimono), and my husband wore a montsuki hakama.

It was not just a wedding.
It was a moment where culture, history, and love came together in the most graceful way.

This is something I would like to share with you very honestly.

They were once complete strangers, living in different worlds. And now, they stood together, beginning a life as husband and wife.

This is not a story.
This is real.

In fact, they first met in person in June 2025 through OZMATCH.

Just over two weeks later, they entered an exclusive relationship, and in August, they had already decided to build a life together, completing their journey with OZMATCH.

Their journey, from first meeting to marriage, unfolded in just a matter of months.

They officially registered their marriage in November, on his birthday — a date that now holds even deeper meaning for them.

The Beauty of a Traditional Japanese Wedding

A Japanese shrine wedding, known as Shinto-style ceremony, is deeply rooted in tradition.

The bride often wears shiromuku, a pure white kimono symbolising a new beginning and the willingness to embrace a new family.
The groom wears montsuki hakama, a formal outfit traditionally worn by samurai, representing dignity and responsibility.

One of the most symbolic rituals is San-san-kudo, where the couple shares sake in three cups, symbolising their union and the joining of two families.

It is quiet.
It is respectful.
And it carries a sense of meaning that feels very different from Western weddings.

Another memorable moment was kagami biraki, the ceremonial opening of a sake barrel.
With a wooden mallet, the couple breaks open the lid together — a symbol of harmony, good fortune, and a joyful beginning to their life as husband and wife.

What About the Guests?

Guests also play an important role in Japanese weddings.

Many wear formal kimono such as furisode or houmongi, adding a sense of harmony and quiet elegance to the celebration.

And then, every now and then, the elegance gives way to something a little more unexpected.
A spontaneous dance, a burst of laughter — and a reminder that even the most traditional celebrations have room for joy.

As the reception came to a close, the couple shared one final, deeply personal touch.
Guests gently showered them with origami cranes — each one folded with care during the celebration.

The idea was theirs.
Many cranes had already been carefully prepared and placed on each table, thoughtfully made by the bride herself.
Seeing them, I couldn’t help but feel how much she had been looking forward to this day.

It was a beautiful ending — filled with warmth, intention, and love.

More Than Just a Marriage

Here is something I often reflect on after attending weddings like this.

When you marry a Japanese woman, you are not only meeting a partner. You are stepping into a culture that values care, respect, and quiet strength.
You are becoming part of something deeper than just a relationship.

And for many of our members, this is exactly what they have been searching for.

At OZMATCH, we are not a platform of endless swiping or uncertainty. We are a place where people meet with intention.

And moments like this wedding remind me why we do what we do. Because behind every introduction, there is the possibility of something real.

If you can imagine yourself standing there one day, under the cherry blossoms, beginning a new chapter of life, then perhaps this journey is worth taking.
We would be honoured to be part of it.
