Valentine’s Day in Japan is very different from Australia
Two weeks ago, I organised a consultation for one of our executive members who is in an exclusive relationship.
He wanted to order a Valentine’s day gift for his girlfriend and he needed my help. I was excited to listen to his plan and we both couldn’t stop smiling.
Valentine’s Day in Australia and Valentine’s Day in Japan are very different.
When I told the Japanese Style Valentines’ Day to my husband, he said he wanted to move to Japan.
Do you know why?
Women confess their love to men on Valentine’s Day in Japan
In Japan, Valentine’s Day is a day for women to confess their love to a man and a woman sends her love with chocolates, not flowers, not jewellery, but CHOCOLATE.
My husband loves the idea that men are the receivers, not givers.
And he loves CHOCOLATE.
Valentine’s Day can also be a difficult day for men
Valentine’s Day is an exciting time for women all over Japan, but it can also be a difficult day for men.
Why?
Imagine if you don’t receive any chocolate on that day, how miserable you would be.
My brother is a very kind and nice man. He used to be my best friend. We helped each other and we shared all good things and bad things.
But there was only one thing that I couldn’t help him with. That was Valentine’s Day.
He was too nice and too kind. He could be a very nice husband but young girls like wild boys and he wasn’t that type of boy at all.
He went through secondary school, high school and university without ever receiving a chocolate. I gave him chocolate every Valentine’s Day but I knew it didn’t mean anything to him.
So Valentine’s Day is an exciting time for women all over Japan, but it can also be a difficult day for men, especially for teenage boys.
Giri Choco VS Honmei Choco
There are two types of Valentine’s Day chocolate. One is called Giri Choco (義理チョコ) and the other is called Honmei Choco (本命チョコ).
Many Japanese girls and women give quite a few Giri Choco. Giri Choco literally means an “obligation chocolate”.
It is given to her male friends, male coworkers, or male bosses. There is no romantic intention between her and them. It is an expression of her gratitude to them.
Therefore mothers give chocolate to their sons too. But it is not a Giri Choco. It comes from a mother’s LOVE.
Then what is Honmei Choco?
Honmei Choco is given to the person a woman really wants to confess her love to.
I think you may have a question: How am I supposed to tell if it’s Giri Choco or Honmyo Choco?
Well, if the chocolate is handmade by her, it is definitely a Honmei Choco. Many Japanese girls try to make a handmade choco even though they have never cooked before.

Love makes you overcome your weaknesses.
If the chocolate is a small package and looks inexpensive, I am sorry but it is a Giri Choco.
Japanese women will love a western style Valentine’s Day
I have been in Australia for 16 years and I have gotten used to a western style Valentine’s Day. Do I like a western style Valentin’s Day? Oh yes. I love it.
And I am sure that all of our Japanese female members will love it too.
But I am not talking about Valentine’s Day only. I love the Western/Australian style in which you show your affections and love to your partner all the time, not only on Valentines’ Day.
And that is why our Japanese female members have joined us. They want to show their love freely to their partner and they want to be shown your love every day.
Are you not afraid of showing your love to someone you care for?
Then you are the perfect person for our Japanese ladies.
OzMatch is an Australian and Japanese Matchmaking Agency and we are going to hold a Valentine’s Day Speed Dating Event on Feb 13th and 14th. Our Japanese ladies may not have chocolate for you but they are looking forward to meeting you at the event.
