What is a Japanese word ‘KONKATSU’?
I have described konkatsu as ‘an activity to find a marriage partner’ or ‘Partner Search’ to my male clients whose first language is not Japanese but let me try to explain konkatsu in more detail.
A Japanese word, ‘Konkatsu’ (partner search), describes the trend of single people proactively taking action to find their marriage partners as Japan faces an increase in the number of people putting off marriage or choosing to remain single.
When was the term ‘Konkatsu’ coined in Japan?
The expression ‘konkatsu’(partner search) is a term coined from “shukatsu” (Job Search).
Shukatsu is writtten as 就活 in Kanji and it means Job Hunting.
Shukatsu stands for Shu (就) shoku (職) Katu (活) dou (動).
Around 2001, Japanese University students began to refer to ‘Shukatsu‘ as ‘job search’, a contraction of ‘Shushoku Katsudou‘.
The content of students’ job-hunting activities themselves became increasingly demanding in Japan, as the number of vacancies decreased due to the prolonged recession and the qualities required became more diverse.
In order to get through such a difficult situation, the name ‘Shukatsu’ became widespread in a light-hearted manner.
Six years later, the term ’Konkatsu‘ was coined in Japan and it implies that searching for a good marriage partner takes the same level of dedication as finding a job.
The term ‘Konkatsu’ was first used in a magazine in 2007 in Japan, and it became widely used to the point where it was nominated for the grand prize in the Buzzwords-of-the-year Contest 2008.
Why Konkatsu (Partner Search) is so popular in Japan
In Japan, population decline began in earnest in 2011 and the birth rate is worryingly low.
Late marriage and remaining single are considered some of the reasons for the dwindling Japanese population, and in order to reverse the declining birth rate in Japan, an increasing number of local governments and corporations have been involved in the support of ‘Konkatsu (Partner Search)’.
With this background, the number of Japanese single women and men seriously engaged in ‘Konkatsu‘ (partner search) is increasing, as is the number of users of marriage agencies and dating information services in Japan.
