Men in their late 50s, have lost confidence
I received an email from one of our Australian male members. It was about our upcoming Online Speed Dating Event. Let’s call him Julian.
OzMatch, an Australian and Japanese matchmaking agency, will be holding an Online Speed Dating Event regularly and this event will be held every month in 2022. So if you are single and want to meet Japanese women, you will have a great chance every month.
Julian joined our Online Speed Dating Event in August. That was the first time for him and he did very well. But it has been more than two months since then and now he has started becoming nervous again.
“I’ve lost a lot of confidence again, since the last event as I’m a very shy & quiet person anyway. ”
Whether you are shy or not, it seems that being in your 50s is an age when men and women alike tend to lose confidence.
I have heard many times “ I don’t have confidence” from Australian male members who are in their 50s to 70s.
They feel they are not in demand anymore. That is not true at all.
But how they feel creates the reality, so if they think they are not in demand, maybe that is true for them.
Try to be someone else in front of the opposite sex
Julian also said in his email.
“I tried to be someone I’m not, at the last event, by talking a lot & asking lots of questions. But that’s not the real me, Misao. This time I’ll just be myself & see what happens.”
This is what he learnt from his experience of joining the OzMatch event and I am very happy to hear that.
We sometimes pretend to be someone else or try to be someone else in order to make a good impression in front of others, especially the opposite sex. And afterwards, we regret or feel embarrassed about why we did that.
The power of being yourself
When I started OzMatch, I was looking for someone who was a native English speaker and could talk to our OzMatch male members.
Because I wanted to hide my poor English skills. I believed that the CEO should speak fluent English otherwise they would doubt OzMatch’s service.
I tried to find someone but I couldn’t find anyone who was as passionate about it as I was.
So I began to do an initial consultation / a zoom chat with the new Australian male members with trepidation.
I was so nervous that all I could do was break out in a cold sweat. I thought they wouldn’t come back again. But the reality was they came back and upgraded their membership.
They told me that the reason they joined OzMatch was because Misao was the one who ran it. Those were great complements and that led me to keep going and here OzMatch is now.
I have learned that I am ok and I am enough, in the course of running OzMatch. I am not pretending to be someone else and that gives me power.

Finding a partner is a journey to understand yourself
Konkatsu (婚活) is an activity to look for a marriage partner and is often used in daily life in Japan.
He is in Konkatsu, she is in Konkatsu, my boss is in Konkatsu, my mum is in Konkatsu…There are tons of people in Konkatsu in Japan.
And OzMatch is a matchmaking agency to support people in Kokatsu.
I look at a bit differently to normal. I keep telling our Japanese female members that Konkatsu is not an activity to find a partner. Konkatsu is a journey to understand yourself.
Julian realized that talking a lot and asking a lot wasn’t him. He likes to listen to people and that makes him comfortable and happy.
I think he has started taking his journey to understand himself deeper and that will lead him to find his future Japanese partner.
