Why Being a Gentleman Still Matters in Japan

What many men don’t realise about Japanese women

As a matchmaker who helps men meet Japanese women, one of the most frequently asked questions I get from men is, “What are Japanese women looking for?”

Many men believe the answer is financial stability.

While financial stability is certainly an important factor, there’s another element I’ve observed in successful couples.

Japanese women want to feel valued, respected, and cherished.
And often, the small actions of a gentleman man conveys these feelings far more effectively than grand gestures.

Japanese women do not seek to be treated like princesses

I sometimes hear this from male members: “I’m going to treat my future girlfriend like a princess.”

Each time, I reply, “Wow, how wonderful!”
But the truth is, I don’t really know what “treating someone like a princess” means.

Does treating her like a princess mean not letting her do housework? Taking her to fancy restaurants? Giving her 100 roses?

That’s certainly lovely, but among the reports I receive daily from Japanese female members, not a single one mentions being taken to a fancy restaurant by their partner.

If you’ve ever taken your Japanese girlfriend to a fancy restaurant, you might be disappointed to read this.
Of course, they must have been happy. They’ll probably remember it from time to time as a romantic memory.

What Japanese women appreciate is not extravagance.
It is thoughtfulness.

The small things matter more than you think

One of the most interesting things I have learned after years of matchmaking is Japanese women rarely talk about expensive gifts.
Instead, they remember small moments.

The reassuring message he sent as soon as he learned they had been matched.

The way he patiently adjusted his English so she could feel comfortable and understood.
The thoughtful little gift he gave her because he remembered something she had mentioned in passing.
The way he checked that she had arrived home safely.

These moments may seem insignificant to a man.
But they often become the moments a Japanese woman remembers for years.

Many Japanese women have experienced relationships without affection

This may be something that is difficult for many men in western countries to fully understand.
In Japan, it is not uncommon for expressions of affection and appreciation to become less frequent after marriage.

Many Japanese women rarely hear phrases such as:
“You look beautiful today.”
“I love you.”

Or even a simple, ”Thank you.”

My father was a typical Japanese man of his generation. As far as I can remember, I never once heard him say “thank you” or “today’s meal was delicious” to my mother.

My older brother belongs to a different generation and is far more expressive than my father ever was.I often hear him thank his wife and compliment her cooking.

Yet even he would probably feel embarrassed saying something like, “You look beautiful today.” I suspect he may have said it only once—on their wedding day over 30 years ago.

Fortunately, younger generations of Japanese men have become much more comfortable expressing appreciation and consideration.
Even so, it is still relatively uncommon for Japanese couples to continue openly expressing affection throughout many years of marriage.

As a result, some women gradually begin to feel more like housemates than romantic partners.
That is why many Japanese women immediately notice when they meet a man who naturally expresses affection, appreciation, and gratitude.

It is not because the gestures themselves are extraordinary.
It is because they make her feel seen, valued, and loved.

Being a gentleman is about consistency

On 9th of June, I held an online meetup for Japanese women who found their partners and got married through OZMATCH.

While they were members of OZMATCH, they attended our monthly meetups. After leaving the service and starting their married lives, they naturally lost contact with many of the other women, so it was a special opportunity to reconnect.

Because the meetup was held on a weekday evening, only a small number could attend. Even so, it was incredibly moving to see women again whom I had not spoken with for a few years.

They shared updates about their lives: getting married, preparing to move to Australia, starting businesses, expecting babies, and celebrating their children’s first birthdays.

Every face on the screen was filled with contentment.
I know how each of these women met her partner. I know what their relationships looked like from the very beginning.
And there was something they all had in common.

All of the Japanese women who married men they met through OZMATCH experienced these small acts of kindness almost every day.
Over time, those small moments made them feel valued, cherished, loved, and supported.
And ultimately, those feelings played a significant role in their decision to marry.

Anyone can be charming on a first date. What matters is what happens after six months, five years, or ten years.

The happiest international couples I have met are not necessarily the most romantic.
They are the couples who continue showing care, appreciation, and affection long after the excitement of a new relationship has faded.

To me, a gentleman is not someone who occasionally performs admirable gestures.
A gentleman is someone whose thoughtfulness becomes a habit.

That consistency creates trust.
And trust creates lasting love.

Japanese women are looking for a partner

Looking back at the stories I have heard from hundreds of Japanese women over the years, I have noticed a common theme.

The things they remember most are not grand romantic gestures.
They are the moments that made them feel they were no longer facing life alone.

The man who started learning Japanese because he believed the effort should be shared.
The man who stayed by her side when she met his family for the first time.
The man who patiently worked through difficulties instead of walking away.
The man who created a space where she felt safe enough to be herself.
The man who prepared her favourite food and drinks before her first visit to his home.

Perhaps that is why being a gentleman still matters in Japan.
Because being a gentleman is not about opening doors.
It is about making sure she never feels she has to face life alone.
