What should I say to my Japanese girlfriend’s parents?

It is wonderful to meet the Japanese woman of my dreams. But meeting her parents is a bit nerve-wracking.
Especially if her parents didn’t understand English and, moreover, didn’t want their daughter to go far away.

Last week, one of our male members, Anthony asked the male members only community.

That is a very good question and most of our male members would like to know what to say to their Japanese girlfriend’s parents in Japan.

Here is great advice from Tom, a former member of OZMATCH who met and married a wonderful woman, Ayaka, on OZMATCH.

Many Japanese parents want their future son-in-law to come and greet them formally

I will base my answer on my own situation and my partner Ayaka.
In May it will be three years since our OMIAI, and since then we have had our wedding photos taken and lodged an application for marriage registration in Japan.

In our case COVID prevented me from seeing Ayaka’s parents for quite a while so I also wrote a letter to introduce myself.

It may be worthwhile to mention that some Japanese parents are more traditional and may (or may not) want the first formal introduction to be in person.
However, I don’t see a nice introduction letter sent to them in the meantime as a bad thing, only a good thing that shows you are serious.

Showing respect is the key to gain trust from your Japanese girlfriend’s parents

Ayaka’s parents initially only wanted the introduction to be in person but the letter I sent them had a great positive impact on their view of me.
It showed them that I was respectful to them and their culture, but foremost that I was serious about the relationship with their daughter.

Based on my own situation, Ayaka’s parents had very little contact with other countries. They did not know how the culture in Australia would be for Ayaka or how I was as a person.

Let your Japanese girlfriend’s parents know that you are a responsible, caring and safe person

As a consequence they were worried for Ayaka. It was very important in my introduction letter that I reassured them that I was a responsible, caring and safe person for their daughter. Ayaka’s parents did not know how she would be in a country with a person they had not met.

I have two children myself. The easiest way to describe how they felt is to imagine you are a parent yourself and what concerns and questions you would have as a parent if your daughter told you she would move to a country you don’t know anything about and live with a person you have never met:

What do your Japanese girlfriend’s parents want to know ?

Is the man reliable?
Will their daughter by safe?
Does the man respect their daughter and them cultural background?
Does the man understand the (often) stronger family values and family commitments in Japan?
Will the parents see their daughter and how often?

If you can make them feel a bit more relaxed about this then you will have progressed a lot in their eyes and will have more acceptance from them.

A few points I mentioned in my letter (though not all).

My background, family and children, my family values.
How serious I was about Ayaka, what I liked in her and how well mannered she was (a reflection of her upbringing).
My interest in Japan and why I like the Japanese culture.
My commitment to Ayaka’s family.

Tell your Japanese girlfriend’s parents

that you are not taking their daughter away from them

That it is never my intention to take Ayaka away from them, that it was only the beginning of a new journey for all of us (her family and mine)
That we would keep visiting Ayaka’s parents and Japan through our life and that they always have an open invitation to visit us.

These are just a few ideas that I used. I had Ayaka translate it all into Japanese and she printed it for me and gave it personally to them.

As mentioned earlier my introduction letter changed their impression of me a lot and they realised I was both serious and reliable. I actually got a handwritten letter later from Ayaka’s mother.

When the day came I saw them in person it only took a meeting and dinner for them to realise what personality I had and they were no longer worried for Aya. I have a very good bond with Ayaka’s parents, siblings and relatives today and speak to them regularly.

I hope you learnt a lot from Tom’s advice.
